Freedom of Choice act

| | Comments (4)

I don't usually quote posts verbatim but Jessica at Feministing has one that's concise and to the point

Feeling down about the Supreme Court decision? Well pick up the phone.

Take action for reproductive justice by joining NARAL Pro-Choice America's National Call-In Day to Support the Freedom of Choice Act.

Here's all you have to do...Call 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to both of your senators and your representative. You can even use the following script:

“Please cosponsor the Freedom of Choice Act (H.R.1964/S.1173) to codify Roe v. Wade and guarantee the right to choose for future generations of women.”

Word.

Read the quote in context here

The one thing I'd add is that when you call (and if you care, one way or the other, you should), then in addition to courteously asking them to cosponsor the bill you should also ask them, equally courteously, whether they'll work to support its *passage.*

Word in advocacy politics since the Alito confirmation is that in general it's a good idea to ask the second question when dealing with Representatives and Senators. In the Alito case both Senators Leiberman and Chafee voted against confirming the anti-abortion nominee, as they'd promised their constituents they would, but shortly after both also voted to halt a filibuster let by pro-choice Democrats knowing full well that *that* vote would ensure his confirmation.

The point being that you need to know they'll *support its passage* (or, if you must, if you're anti-abortion to know they'll block it) instead of just vote for or against it when it comes up.

The bottom line for you, though, isn't that different: Make the call. Say how you feel about it. Seek assurance. Thank the person who takes your call and you're done.

One last thing: you don't have to be a woman of childbearing age to make the call, you know. Even if the issue doesn't affect you directly it... just might affect the lives of those around you. Make the call.

Update:

I checked here and confirmed that both my senators are cosponsors. You can check whether yours are as well.

I checked here and confirmed that my congressional representative is a cosponsor. You can check whether yours is as well.

Frustratingly I couldn't find the text of the bill on the NARAL/Pro-Choice America website that's sponsoring the national call in, though I did find a handy elected official look-up tool there.

Disturbingly, I was however able to find the full text of the House version and Senate version of the bill at the National Right to Life website. That's where I found the list of co-signers as well! If you've ever wondered why one side seems to win so many more of these battles it might just be because one side's a little better organized than the other.

Lucky you. My legislators are on neither list. You're not only articulate and great at folding laundry, but you have all the right politics (in my opinion). Damn, you're hot!

[Hey, even if you're sure they'll work against it let 'em know in no uncertain terms what you'd prefer. There aren't as many safe seat on the traditional anti-choice side of the aisle. Even if you can't change their minds it might remind them to tone down the gloating. Thanks, Red. --fl]

The text can be found at the Library of Congress web site.

Some sites used the 2006 bill Nos. S2593 and HR5151 which is a little more difficult to find if you don't include the year.

[Thanks for the link, Five. (I've tweaked your original text to make the link live.) --fl]

Don't know what you tweaked it with, but its not there.

[I used the URL you provided to make the text "Library of Congress web sites" a live link. Thanks again, Five. --fl]

Perhaps it is my browser, but most of my comment is underlined and there is no link. Should have said this first.

[Apologies, Five. It was my browser. I'd used mis-matched quotes for the link and my nice-but-nerdy browser decided it "knew what I meant." But when I tried it in a more common browser it was just plain broken. I've fixed the typo and checked it in another browser so it *should* be there now. Thanks for being so patient. --fl]
