And speaking of Senator Brownback...

Martha Solay, a brave Colombian woman who told her pregnancy story in order to challenge Colombia’s restrictive abortion laws, died today. She died because “pro-life” abortion laws in her country meant that she could not terminate her pregnancy, despite the fact that she had uterine cancer and waiting to treat it would inevitably kill her.

Rest of the post here.

Solay spent the last four months of her life trying to raise money so her four daughters (ages 2, 5, 6, and 17) who are now orphaned, could survive without her.

Speaking as a merely mortal man I'm chilled to the bone that, should I die before my children are grown, my partner might die of complications from a pregnancy that, thanks to Presidential wannabe Brownback & Co.'s efforts she might not be permitted to terminate. So I'm not posting this out of misplaced, goo-goo, liberal, sensitive-new-age-guy sympathy (though I have plenty of that.) I'm posting out of pure, unadulterated, and not at all mis-placed self-interest. What happened to Solay shouldn't happen to anybody. If Brownback or one of his coven ever gets their way, though, it could happen to *any of us!*

It's worth noting that Brownback also opposes immigration reform. Goodness knows if Solay had been able to come here instead of remaining in Columbia she might have terminated the non-viable pregnancy that killed her, thus depriving her daughters of the morally uplifting experience of being orphaned, and Sen. Brownback the chance to give her a hearty, posthumous attaboy.

What a terrible and sad story. I hope her children will be okay. Truly sad.
