Uggh! I’m in the middle of upgrading my server software and I’ve (temporarily, I hope) broken everything. I’ll keep you posted. Meanwhile, here’s my HNT entry to help keep you distracted (again, I hope!)

I’ll continue to note progress at the bottom of this post.

Well this is awkward. I’m going to be updating my blog software tonight which mean a) I’m not going to be posting a new photo and that’s ok because b) while I’m updating it I have to turn off all comments anyway.
It also means you may see some… unusual error messages like…
Error 500 — Server Has No Pants, or
Error 400 — Bad Request
If so I apologize.
But!
I can at least give you a preview of the images that might come up when you get those errors. And since those errors are hosted on Flickr you can still see them even if I screw everything else up on the back end. While the site is rebuilding templates may get a big wiggy and various sidebars may disappear but it should all be relatively temporary.
With luck I should be done tonight. If I’m not so lucky you should still be able to see the following images.
Happy HNT (or Half-nekkid Thursday!)

Update status reports:
7) Comments are working and the built-in spam filter seems to be working pretty well. But reCaptcha is totally frog-legs so I’ve turned it off for now. Anyway, for now you can leave comments again.
6) You know, if I’d known it was going to be this complicated I a) wouldn’t have waited a couple of years to upgrade my site and, thus, skipped a couple of major upgrades and b) I might have just started over with the old database and all new templates.
5) M’kay, comments are visible now but reCaptcha’s broken — meaning you can type in the comments box but it won’t submit anything. $%!$
4) Ok, I think I’ve got the caching thing working. Now can I get comments working and if so will reCaptcha work too? We’ll see.
3) Ok, this is good. Everything was taking five minutes to update, because I think it was rewriting the entire site. But I found some new caching options and I think it might help speed things up if I turned that on. :-)
2) Oh, ok, so far it looks like the problem was I was using a fast, server-based SSH terminal to download and manipulate server files instead of a slow web-based FTP client to upload them from my laptop to the server instead. Of course! Ya gotta admit, Linux just couldn’t be any more intuitive than that!
1) Hmm… At the moment it looks like some kind of weird Linux/Unix group permissions are keeping me from upgrading my software — everything else seems identical except for the group files are assigned to. Which may not only be more than you want to know about, it’s more than I want to know about.
You know what they say about Unix though, it’s intuitive and easy to learn once you thoroughly understand it. Just like Sanskrit.

_[Remember, comments are still disabled until the server is upgraded. Sorry about that. —fl]_

there seems to be a bug cos whener I follow a link to a specific blog post, this is the only post that appears (doesn't seem to matter which post or link I follow)
[Thanks for the head's up, SE! I think it's from me experimenting with the new caching tools and... screwing up. I've forced a rebuild of all the pages and that seems to have fixed it. --fl]
