Lindsay Beyerstein of Majikthise asks
I wonder if Hollywood luminaries will sign manifestos in defense of James Phillip Edwards, a 60-year-old Kansas City man who admits to drugging little girls and molesting them
I wonder further if they'd consider 42 days adequate should Edwards be found guilty, since that's all Polanski served for drugging and assaulting a 13-year-old before skipping the country and they think that's all the time he should ever serve.

Oh but Polanski is ~a special artist~ that doesn't deserve to be jailed because he's nice to his colleagues. *massive eye roll*

But it isn't about Polanski anymore. His victim has stated over and over that every time this comes into the media, she and her family suffer all over again. She has pleaded that the charges be dropped. She's done her therapy and just wants to live her life.
But why would we listen to the victim when we have a principle to discuss, a point to make?
[Hi Kate. I agree that if the luminaries in question based their arguments on the victim's wishes there would be more sympathy. As it stands they're position on Polansk would tend to support this guy Edwards as well. Prosecutors probably should respect her wishes, especially after so long. But the tradeoff is that At least some of Edward's victim's families feel the same way -- our treatment of victims is... chaotic. I may do it reluctantly but I'm going to stand by the snark against Polanski's defenders. --]

Fair enough. Having grown up in L.A., I've found ignoring the "luminaries" the only viable option for saving my sanity. But if snark works for you, by all means... ;)
