So via a @filamentmag tweet I found the website Naked Men, Happy Women, by essiegabi. But she’s got a significant problem.
Since I’ve long been irked by the dearth of representations of men in visual erotica that aren’t by or for other men (either as objects of desire for gay men, or as proxies or foils for hetero men) her About Page is near and dear to my heart.
Nowadays images of naked women are commonly shown everywhere; in advertisements, commercials, games and movies, art, on billboards and on TV. A naked female body is pleasant to look at, so no complaints here. But something is missing, isn’t there?
Have you, like me, been wondering why there is so little male nudity in every day life for us hetero sexual women to enjoy? Do you agree it is unfair to say the least, and do you want to see more? Then this blog is the perfect blog for you. Naked men, happy women, aka NMHW, is created to discuss various related topics with you, to post examples of how things could/should be, and to find ways to change the current situation to our advantage. It is about time men catch up with us when it comes to showing their goodies, and even more for us women to tell them what we want.
But she’s got a significant problem.
The images she captures really aren’t what you see in male-oriented porn. Including so-called “Clothed Female, Naked Men” or CFNM fetish sites that are… also generally considered male-oriented. One thing that stands out, or maybe doesn’t, is that when penises are shown they’re almost never erect. Another is that the men might be erotically posed but not erotically poised — they look neither dominantly nor submissively ready, and they don’t look sexually needy. Instead the photos essiegabi selects are relaxed men with clear potential to be sexual. Oh yeah, and while the men are generally under age 40 (and mostly under 30) and none seem overweight, neither are they all athletically or militarily buff. In other words they tend to look the way a lot of women say they like to see men, as opposed to what men seem to think women like… or as opposed to how men expect other men to look.
I like the site quite a lot, and if you’re turned on by heterosexual men you may like it even more. But there’s a significant problem. Essiegabie explains the problem
Oh no, it is Tuesday already. Where is our new hottie?!
I have to admit it: I am running out of stock…
After hours of surfing the net and almost giving up hope, I finally found this image.
If she wanted images of eroticized women she could find them anywhere up to and including the covers of Sukudo puzzle books. If she wanted images of men in stylized porn-for-men situations she’d have to look a little further than the nearest grocery store aisle but such images are still abundant on magazine racks and online…
But if she wants to find images that work for her she’s evidently got to work really hard. Considering that there may be literally (not figuratively) millions of porn sites out there, with anywhere from tens to hundreds of million images, and considering that you can almost play “Pornsite Bingo” by Googling a completely random words and the word “porn” and find someone who’s already made a fetish site for it with surprising regularity, it’s a real surprise she’d have any trouble at all…
And yet…
It appears to be a significant problem.

I remember a bunch of friends
Submitted by Rachel @ The Sex Myth (not verified) on Tue, 2010-04-20 20:33.I remember a bunch of friends and I attempted this same exercise back in high school, looking for pictures of naked men on the school computers. We thought it was all rather naughty, but we came up even shorter than Naked Men, Happy Women – the only images we could find were on gay porn sites.

Submitted by TsaphanBabe (not verified) on Tue, 2010-04-20 23:24.There’s the false belief that women aren’t turned on by visual images. This is a socially constructed reality and may be a real reality for lots of us, but only because that’s what we’ve believed our whole lives.
I wish I wasn’t bothered by porn so much. The absence of non-romance novel/gay men images of men is problematic. If it didn’t bug me so much to look at porn I’d join the search for decent images (like I did with “beautiful vulvas” for a very short time).
I don’t see many people taking up this issue and running with it, though. The very concept threatens the whole structure of our economy.

PS Same with the absence of images of unshaved women’s vulvas (except for fetish sites). Also “real” women tend to be relegated (in my small, small, small amount of experience looking) to fetish types of sites, too.
Very good post and raises
Submitted by Kaija (not verified) on Wed, 2010-04-21 05:26.Very good post and raises good questions. There is definitely a dearth of “porn for straight women” and until straight women start asking for what we want, we’ll keep getting what other people think that we want. However, I think it’s only a matter of time…younger women/sex-positive women are a growing proportion of the female population who reject the “women aren’t visual/women want romance and puppies and kittens/women want monogamy/women think naked men are offputting” construction. In fact, xkcd hit this one recently with http://www.xkcd.com/714/, which I believe you addressed, fl :)
As for the unshaven vulvas…they are making a comeback, Heather. Lots of guys mags and sites are gravitating towards the hairy bush and there are lots of men who prefer that and are asking for it. Taboo mag always has some in every issue and one of the latest Hustler covers has a very surprisingly voluptuous model, refreshingly fleshy and more “real”. Again, this is b/c men are asking for more variety in their porn (according to the letters to the editor in the mags and according to my guy friends, anyways).
I thin Filament mag and the site you discuss is a good start!
Filament magazine is awesome
Submitted by Plymouth (not verified) on Wed, 2010-04-21 21:05.Filament magazine is awesome but their ratio of articles to porn is WAYYYY too tilted towards “articles”. For what it cost me to import it I want more ass! And cock.
But, damn, they have some pretty boys in there!

I saw the Naked Men, Happy
Submitted by Fangirlswoons (not verified) on Wed, 2010-04-21 13:14.I saw the Naked Men, Happy Women blog via the Filament tweet also. It is a great site, and I think that we are all in agreement here that there is a frustrating dearth of visual content for women who like to look at men. Filament discussed the topic of what hetero women like visually. Most interesting is how this topic has never really been addressed before. And though I find a myriad of blogs on the web that talk about sex from a woman’s point of view, none offer visual content.
I have began posting about this (with visuals!) on my LiveJournal. I intend to discuss this a lot more: What do women want?
I’ll start with this statement: In my porn, there are pictures of hot men!
I enjoyed reading this post

It is true, as you state in your last paragraph, that there are lots of porn sites with pictures of naked men, also sites especially made for heterosexual women. But the photos they show there, are not doing the trick for me. I think many of the men that are shown on those sites are not sexy at all. Yes, they have muscles. Yes, they have an erection – and usually a big one. But the way they pose… So not lustful or erotic.
I realize that many women like and fanatsize of those type of men. I – and many other women – do not. To me, the images look cheap, and the men lack that special ‘something’. That something is what I am looking for when I search the web for images. And that something is truthfully hard to find. But I am not giving up hope :)
Btw, I am also working on an official website. It is far from done and a struggle to make it look good, but if you like my blog, you might want to have a look there as well.

Are there?? I have been searching the web like mad, and all I see are naked chicks! The only naked men I see are the ones being sucked off by a woman.
If you know of sites where there are naked men, please share with the class. I have found almost none.
Thanks!

it's a yahoo group, and you'll have to join it; this way I can restrict membership to ladies only:)
