Odd Exception to Ingrained Male Cross-Gendered Role-Behavior Avoidance Reflex

Mon, 2010-08-23 00:05

Although I got over the practical problem years ago I still feel that reflexive self-consciousness when I hold or carry someone’s purse for them in public situations like crowded bars.

I noticed by its absence that I don’t have no trace of that reflex while holding or carrying two women’s purses in a crowded bar.

That is all.

What is that? I once tried to

What is that? I once tried to hand my husband, who really is quite the feminist, my purse in public, and it fell to the floor. The look on my husband’s face was what you would expect if I had attempted to hand him a dead rat covered in feces. This same man has worn a skirt and eyeliner in public. (Not at the same time, though.)

Honestly.

“I noticed by its absence that I don’t have no trace of that reflex while holding or carrying two women’s purses in a crowded bar” has awfully convoluted grammar. I’m pretty sure I can guess what you mean from context, but ugh.

I get read as straight-up female, and lately have been carrying a metamour’s purse semi-regularly (because she’s carrying the baby). I find it awfully weird, but life is full of awfully weird things.

Hah. Dated a butch bi guy (I’m a girl) who’d carry my purse proudly, reveling in the surprised stares. But I wonder how he’d felt had I not been next to him.

For years I’ve had anything

For years I’ve had anything but a purse…. messenger bags, a fat wallet in the back pocket (my chiropractor nixed that years ago), or big coats with lots of hidden pockets, especially during my goth/mod phase in the ’80s.

Purses to me are just too femmy, and I spent many years leaning towards butch. My last lover got me off that track, and now I find myself lusting after huge leather bags I can’t afford or justify having, bags that would turn a straight man’s stomach.

Weirds me out, really.

Mmm, big coats with lot of pockets! I was never a goth but I went through a phase with an old army trench coat that, fully loaded with everything from books to crescent wrenches, must have weighed 40 pounds. Once I found book-bag style backpacks I never went back.

Thanks, CR.
