I wonder if it's got anything to do with the fact that since at least 2002 more women than men have been applying to and attending college and graduate school.

I'm not sure I see a really definite connection here, but it's interesting to think about. Certainly those dirty hippie places like Berkeley have their share of uppity women.
Have to say I don't see any major politicians defending any policy on education that I think will do any good.
