The Grammar and Maybe Punctuation of Underwear

Suzie of Echidne of the Snakes turns a standard cliché about women’s underwear on it’s head, to good effect. (She’s quoting a Frisky post.)

“Typically, girls wear sexy underwear at all times because, even if we know no one is going to see them, we just feel better about ourselves when we know we look pretty underneath.”

My new questions: Is it possible for a woman to feel good about herself without wearing sexy underwear? Is the Frisky satire or a sign of the apocalypse?

Read the quote, and follow the links, here.

Suzie also discusses, um, widely differing views on the meaning of black underwear. She says for a lot of women it means “I’ve got my period” since it doesn’t stain. She finds a link to a guy who feels it means he’s going to get laid.

I always wear white underpants when I've got my period because it's the cheapest and ugliest and thus sacrificial.

I think if a guy sees my underwear, that's a pretty good sign he's going to get laid.

I dunno about the whole "I want to be pretty underneath" thing, but I was observing just today that I always wear nice underwear on the weekends even if I don't intend to show it to anyone. It's part of relaxing and of demonstrating to myself that this is my time, as opposed to the utilitarian plain underwear of the work week.

I definitely don't wear sexy underwear to work, because nice bras are uncomfortable for heavy lifting and awkward maneuvering, and nice underpants will just end up all sweaty. And the statement that all women wear sexy undies all the time is both factually untrue and unsettlingly sex-class-y.

The advantage to sweeping ankle length skirts and a slip is you don't need underwear at all. Oh right not putting a token poly cotton shield no one gets to see anyways over my bits makes me some kind of hussy because everyone has x-ray vision that lets them know I'm asking for something other than to be free of skin rashes.

I've never got the whole thing of why some women don't wear white knickers when they're on... If you're using your knickers as some sort of backup pad well....

... I don't own any "sexy underwear".

I'm actually reminded of a conversation I had a while back on a message board, in which some guy had gotten lingerie for his girlfriend and was trying to browbeat her into wearing it. And eventually she got frustrated and said, "What's in it for me?"

He went on the message board and said, more or less, "What's wrong with her? Don't women like lingerie?"

I think I managed to beat through his head that just because his fetish is one that gets portrayed in mainstream movies doesn't mean that everyone has it...

Reading over there makes me want to add that 4/5 of my bras are black, though.

That would be:

3 black nursing bras
1 black sports bra
1 grey sports bra

Mmmm, teh sexxxay!

Personally, I find that going commando on a date is cheaper and equally sexy.

Of course, most so-called sexy bras don't work for me, because they feel the need to pad my (A-cup) breasts. So I can't feel anything until I actually take the bra off which, well, goodbye spontaneity.

Nearly all my underwear are black bikini underwear. Which some people think is sexy. I find bikini underwear to be the most comfortable and black to be the most practical with my goth wardrobe.

You missed one other trend:

You missed one other trend: they are portrayed as slightly more realistic manikins – stiff, unmoving, mindless, emotionless, but ‘living’. Notice that the fembot in the ads for that alcohol you showed recently had more ‘life’ to it than many fashion models exhibit.
