FTN of Fade to Numb just had one. Kidder at Sex is Fun has (duh, medical not erotic but still not work safe) photos of his. Em and Lo interviewed a younger (27-year-old) about why he got his (it’s a long list.)
And late last week I gave a friend a ride home from the clinic after he had his.
It’s been a while but I’ve had two (one at age 21, another at 44, with a reversal in between) but this just seemed like a good week to break out my two vasectomy-related mementos. The ring I cast from silver and gold in my college metal-arts shop. The license plate I picked up at a yard sale recently (the seller’s partner had given him a vasectomy shower years before when he got his.)
Happy HNT (or Half-nekkid Thursday!)

A responsible man is just so incredibly hot. Cool ring.
[It doesn't really ring true for me when people say "a man doing the dishes is incredibly hot" because that's just pulling your own weight. Saying a *responsible* man is incredibly hot (even if he's just taking responsibility for the dishes) rings true like a bell. Thanks so much, Adela. --fl]

LOL....I do love a man with a sense of humor! Wow, twice???
[Yup. Twice. A vasectomy itself really isn't such a big deal -- you get an ice pack, you take Tylenol III the first afternoon and regular Tylenol for a day or two after that, you don't move around much for a day, and then you're just careful not to exercise strenuously for ten days. The payoff, of course, is *very* rewarding if you've got a long-term partnership. (Even if you've got virus issues it's still a big load off everyone's mind if pregnancy is no longer desired.) The reversal though? That takes longer, and longer to recover from too. That's *also* worth it considering the intended outcome of that. Thanks, Breve. (Oh yeah, cute pearls. Happy HNT!) --fl]

I really like that ring. :)
I do think it's great that more men are going the vasectomy route in committed relationships than women doing the tubal route. There are reasons for either, but it's traditionally less medically risky to do the vasectomy. Taking a snip for the one you love? Now that's romance. :)
[Yup, at least in the States vasectomy is actually *way* up there for couples who've finished having children. Tubals are supposed to be relatively ok when done immediately after childbirth but even then it's still abdominal surgery and compared to the almost-superficial incisions for a vasectomy that's a hugely greater risk. Of course it would be even nicer if there was, oh, *something* available for men between snips and condoms! Thanks, Ms. I. (Love the colors in your photo this week. Happy HNT!) --fl]

I had a tubal, instead of insisting the man have a vasectomy. I knew that my body was done having kids.
However, that ring is cool. :)
hhnt
peace...
[Tubals are amazingly popular for women who are ready to be done too. I'm not big on insisting that anyone have surgery unless *they* choose it. But I wish more men were comfortable choosing. Thanks, Monkey. And Happy HNT to you too. (Your photo this week is another great combination of sexy and sweet.) --fl]

Oh now I do like a man who has the snip :D I remeber when my son's father got his, was an interesting process and totally damn worth it ... I didn't realise the extent of the bruising though! He got called gorilla balls for a while haha HHNT xx
[The problem is if you're too rough too early and you get any bleeding there's nowhere for it to go. So you can really swell up. It's why you really want to just lay low and use ice. Sure, you *can* be a lot more active... it's just the more active the more risk of swelling. Thanks, Vanimp. --fl]

I like that ring!
I like the other pictures too, they made me giggle. Happy HNT!

Love the ring and the license plate frame is great too! My SH got the snip a few months back and I assure you, he shudders every time he thinks about it, so big props to you!
HHNT!
[Hmm... I think the solution is to make him shudder whenever *you* think about it... and moan... and sigh. Because, seriously, while nobody's ever wanted to jump into bed with me just because I'm pregnancy-risk free I've noticed there's more time to think about other things when there's one less (big) thing to worry about. :-) Thanks, SW. And happy HNT. --fl]

I had mine in 1980 when I was 37 (after three babies in four years we worked out what was causing it)
I've never regretted it and nearly 30 years on, the equipment is still working to my entire satisfaction.
:-) Happy HNT
[Yup, a day on the couch with an icepack compared to 30 years of persistent stress? No brainer, LR. Good choice. Happy HNT to you too. --fl]

I wish I had read your blog 15 years ago when my partner was contemplating a vasectomy. He asked his urologist about the procedure and received more of a warning than an encouragement. Perhaps the urologist did not want to have a patient claim that he was mislead about the post-surgical pain and complications, but the net effect was that we both decided it was too risky.
Love that ring, fl, and the way you framed the discussion.
Happy HNT!

[I'm guessing the doc was just being thorough about disclosure -- he probably wasn't *actively* trying to discourage your partner. And there *really are* risks to *every* invasive procedure. But... you know, it really is something the individual has to want enough to be comfortable about. Still, sometimes it never hurts to get a second opinion. And for something like that it doesn't have to come from another doctor -- often just talking to people who've had a procedure helps. Which means one of the problems is it's not necessarily something we disclose to our friends, and therefore it's hard to get, or give, feedback. Thanks, Kochanie. --fl]

At 21? Isn't that a little bit young?
But I like the art...
Happy HNT!
[I didn't think so. :-) I wanted to make sure any children I had were really intentional, and that meant (as I explained to the doctor) that I would either have a reversal or adopt since each process took about the same amount of time, money, and commitment. The reversal worked pretty well for me. And I'm pretty sure if I hadn't gotten it I'd be at least a grandfather by now. :-) Thanks, Maeve. --fl]

Good choice and I like the ring. I didn't think they did those at such a young age (21). Yikes!
Happy HNT
[They'll do it, you just have to talk to them about it. Of course if there was anything between The Snip and condoms for men I wouldn't have had to go there and still be responsible. There just weren't. And, embarrassingly, *still aren't!* Thanks, Rage. And happy HNT to you too. --fl]

I love that ring!
And yes I've had the snip ... though I must admit that I'd rather not have to go through it a second time - the doctor got on my nerves - literally!
No regrets though, other than not having such souvenirs!
Happy HNT :)
[Yup. Thanks, Ro. And happy HNT to you too. --fl]

ok i got a giggle out of the license plate.. and you made the ring? did I read that right .. very cool
Thank you for your kind words on my blog.
and thanks for visiting .. I lurk here so I figured I should give you a shout out :)
[Yup, I made the ring in two pieces (the silver ring itself and the gold vasectomy symbol) using lost-wax casting and then assembled them with silver solder. It was fun. I really, *really* wish I had a casting lab again -- I used to work in a college fine metals shop -- because while I wouldn't want to do it for a living it's a *great* way to express ideas. Thanks, Shibari. --fl]
