Staying on your toes

So I was stopping for a red light at an intersection and, for no good reason at all, I started wondering about masturbating standing up.

Shere Hite, who did a couple of big reports on men’s and women’s sexual behavior back in, I think, the late 1970’s, said a lot of men masturbate in the shower, which I assume means they’re standing up. And either she (or maybe it was a Nancy Friday book that came out around the same time) had an anecdote about a woman who preferred standing on tiptoe with her vibrator against her clitoris because she came very quickly that way.

I think I’ve tried it standing up a couple of times, and I’m sure if I applied myself I could learn to enjoy it, but it’s never really worked that well for me. (I much prefer lying or sitting.)

The tiptoe thing sounds interesting since it would intensify muscle tension in the legs — something that definitely seems to work for a lot of people.

So anyway, now I’d like to know what your take is. (If you haven’t tried it and you’ve got the time…)

Thanks.

I once pulled a muscle by doing that.

[Yikes, Shakes. I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you. --fl]

So as a very recent delurker who's been reading a while, I notice that you rarely get comments except for your HNT - does that ever make you feel, you know, used? :-)

Anyway, I for one can not come standing up, and I've definitely tried. But I'm a grrrl. I do know many men who can come just fine that way.

See, I appreciate you for your mind!

[Ruth, I'm totally thrilled that you appreciate me for my mind, not least because I can do that while monogamous. :-) HNT is a group activity and generally speaking participants go check out other people's photos and say nice things about them. It's a formal requirement of HNT, it's just fun to do. Sounds like a lot of women can do it standing up too, but if you have a hard time that makes two of us. Thanks! --fl]

My problems doing this in the shower are that I tend to be on the s-l-o-w side and a small hot water heater. Somewhere in the back of my mind I'm always thinking, 'Will I get there before I freeze my butt off?' So, not in the shower.

And that pretty much goes for doing it standing up anywhere else as well. But that's just if we're talking about masturbation...

[Good point. With other standing-up things people can brace themselves with *both* hands. :-) Thanks, Captain! --fl]

lol! Yeah, no. I've never come standing up and I'm pretty sure I'd just fall over. As for on tip toes... Ow! I have very tense calves and I can't tense them at all without severe cramps :(

I just asked my partner if he's masturbated in the shower and he got that cute extremely embarrassed expression that means "of course I have but why do you ask embarrassing questions?!" lmol

He said that standing/sitting/lying, it's pretty much all the same to him

[Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's all about what you practice and (especially, according to Shere Hite) how you first learn. I read somewhere years and years ago that the neural pathways for sexual (as opposed to senusal) stimulation take surprisingly long to develop. If that's true (disclaimer: it was a long time ago and I might have overinterpreted) then it makes sense that big shifts like going from lying to standing (or the reverse) might take a while to lay new wiring for. Which might or might not always be worth the effort. Thanks, Dana. --fl]

I have tried it standing up. Doesn't work for me. I prefer to be reclining:)

[Yeah, reclining works just fine, doesn't it? Thanks, WG. --fl]

I've done it standing up - usually in the bathroom so that I can watch myself in the mirror. It gives the old slang expression "A knee-trembler" a new meaning. However, I much prefer doing it lying down so that I can relax and enjoy the after-glow.

[I remember watching a video of one of Betty Dodson's self-loving classes. Because muscles from the legs attach awfully close to deeper parts of our genitals up in the pelvic floor, she's a big advocate of adding muscle tension, sometimes to the point of trembling fatigue, to heighten sensation. Thanks, LR. --fl]
